CHINA-INDIA: GLOBAL TIMES PUBLISHES ARTICLE LAUDING MODI'S CRACKDOWN ON FOREIGN-FUNDED NGOs

The May 5, 2015, issue of the official Global Times published an article by a Delhi-based Indian described as an 'independent journalist and strategic analyst', Rajeev Sharma. He said the Modi government has cancelled the registration of nearly 9,000 foreign-funded NGOs and been able "to act fearlessly against many influential NGOs like Greenpeace and the Ford Foundation and take them head on because it is a much stronger government than its predecessor". He accused foreign-funded NGOs of having a "hidden political agenda and non-transparent functioning."

Rajeev Sharma described India as "a difficult country to govern not only because it is a developing country but also because it is a true democracy where dissent is not unwelcome".  He said "Modi needs to be lauded for acting firmly and decisively against the errant NGOs. Moreover, foreign governments have no standing over the issue as it is India's internal matter".
