CHINA-JAPAN

Asahi Shimbun reported on June 28, 2015, that while speaking at the World Peace Forum Symposium in Tsinghua University in Beijing on June 27, 2015, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi  said Japan must accept the reality that China is now a major player on the world stage for bilateral relations to improve. Referring to the tension in the relationship, he said  "The root of the problem lies in the fact that Japan has not accepted or welcomed China's development and emergence in the world." At the same time, he added, "There will be no change in China's policy of seeking a peaceful relationship" and that "With the passage of time, I believe the China-Japan relationship can return to a course that is normal and stable."  Wang Yi also said "The choice made by leaders will be important, they could choose to remain in the shadows of history or they could choose to seek reconciliation with other nations to jointly clear a path for the future." He added that while Beijing would not expand its territorial claims, it would also never decrease the area that it claims as its own.

With Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expected to issue a statement in connection with the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in August, Wang touched upon historical issues that have also hampered bilateral ties.

Speaking at the same symposium, Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao struck a more conciliatory tone in terms of foreign affairs and stressed the importance of China spreading the range of common interests with the international community to jointly tackle common problems.
