CHINA-ETHNIC MINORITIES: TIBET

Sonam Topgyal, who self-immolated on July 9, 2015, at the centre of Kyegudo, in the rural county of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai province (the Tibetan area of Kham) is reported to have left a note for the Dalai Lama where he said that 'China’s policies are aimed at eradicating Tibet’s religion, culture and traditions, and destroying the environment. Tibetans have no recourse to express their views about the situation'.

Following the mysterious death of Lama Tenzin Delek, there has been an outpouring of protests and condemnations from Tibetans around the world. Young Tibetans have shut down the Chinese consulates in New York and San Francisco and, in Sydney on July 22, 2015, Tibetans stormed the Embassy and one climbed the flag pole and tore down the Chinese flag. Seven Tibetans were arrested.
