CHINA-SOUTH CHINA SEA: ADIZ

On July 25, 2015, for the first time since its imposition, a Lao Airlines flight, number QV916, enroute from South Korea’s Gimhae International Airport to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (LPDR), was turned back by Chinese airspace controllers for not having approval to pass through 'Chinese airspace'.

(Comment: In November 2014, China issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) establishing a new Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea. The NOTAM called for all aircraft flying through the ADIZ to file pre-flight plans (FPL), aircraft transponder details and communications status with Chinese air traffic authorities in Beijing prior to flying. To date, no commercial traffic has been turned back despite the varied carrier response to the Chinese NOTAM requirement.)
