CHINA-US: OP FOX-HUNT

A month prior to Chinese President Xi Jinping's scheduled visit to the US, the US administration has delivered a warning to Beijing about the presence of Chinese government agents operating secretly in the United States to pressure prominent expatriates, including some wanted in China on charges of corruption, to return home immediately. American officials said that Chinese law enforcement agents are operating covertly in the US to hunt down and repatriate Chinese fugitives living abroad and recover allegedly ill-gotten gains. The Chinese government has officially named the effort Operation Fox Hunt. Separately, China's official media quoted Liu Dong, a Director of Operation Fox Hunt, as saying that Chinese agents must comply with local laws abroad and that they depend on cooperation with the police in other countries. But, in a telling admission, he added, “Our principle is thus: Whether or not there is an agreement in place, as long as there is information that there is a criminal suspect, we will chase them over there, we will take our work to them, anywhere.”

(Comments: According to China's Ministry of Public Security, more than 930 suspects have been repatriated since 2014, including more than 70 who returned this year voluntarily.)
