57-year old Ms Sheri Yan, a very well networked Australian socialite who holds Australian and US dual nationality, has been charged in New York with funnelling almost US$1 million in bribes to the President of the United Nations General Assembly, John Ashe. John Ashe was elected President of the UNGA for a 1-year term in 2013. Sheri Yan's husband Roger Uren, now a media executive and former Australian intelligence analyst who also worked at the Office of National Assessments, was once tipped to be Kevin Rudd's ambassador to Beijing.
(Comment: Sheri Yan is the daughter of a celebrated Chinese artist who, she said, worked with the People's Liberation Army's cultural troupe. She is known for being well-spoken, charming and impeccably dressed. She met her future husband Roger Uren when he was working at the Australian embassy in Washington in the 1980s, while she was working for China Radio International. Ms Yan helped Roger Uren research his well-regarded book about a powerful Chinese intelligence chief, The Claws of the Dragon: Kang Sheng – The Evil Genius Behind Mao.
