CHINA-PLA

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Col Yang Yujun confirmed at the monthly briefing of the Ministry of National Defence (MND) on December 31, 2015 that Zhang Yan, who was the head of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) 26th Group Army and one of its youngest commanders, went drinking with two subordinates currently serving in the PLA's 39th Group Army, one of whom drank himself to death. Zhang Yan was thereafter fired. Col Yang Yujun said Zhang Yan's case had been "handled in accordance with the rules" and described it as a "typical case" of the sort of poor behaviour and lax discipline the ruling Communist Party has been trying to stamp out.
