CHINA-US: PEW OPINION SURVEY

According to a 2015 Pew Research Center survey almost half of Americans say that China's emergence as a world power is a major threat to their well-being and 46% think China will or already has replaced the U.S. as the world's leading superpower. Negative sentiment about China in the US has exceeded 50% in each of the last three years in contrast to just a decade ago when, for example in 2006, only 29% of Americans had an unfavorable opinion of China. The 2015 Pew Research Center survey also said about seven in ten Americans have concerns about territorial disputes between China and its neighbors with 56% saying they would use military force to defend an Asian ally such as Japan, South Korea or the Philippines if it was attacked by Beijing. Much of this negative American sentiment can be traced to concerns about the economic challenge posed by China. Two-thirds of Americans voiced the view that the large amount of U.S. debt held by Beijing is a very serious problem for the U.S; six in ten Americans thought that the loss of U.S. jobs to China is a very big problem; and roughly half believe the American trade deficit with China is a very grave concern. Americans are also quite critical of China's human rights record.A relatively new China-related issue concerns Americans: cyberattacks with more than half (54%) describing such activity as a very serious problem for the U.S.

In the context of the US President elections, the 2015 Pew Research Center survey  said 62% of Republicans, but only 44% of Democrats see China's emergence on the world stage as a major threat to U.S. well-being.
