CHINA-INTERNAL: HONGKONG

There is growing resentment, called  'Localism', at Beijing apparently ignoring the interests of Honkong and focussing on integration of the territory with the Mainland. Localism is a new thinking among Hong Kong youth. Examples cited are the CY Leung administration's decision to build the high-speed rail link, the third runway and the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge instead of diverting these resources to social welfare, health services and pension.

Scholarism, a big student activist group led by Joshua Wong, has decided to form a new political party in April to participate in the Legislative Council election in September, with the determination of the future of Hong Kong as its key agenda. Joshua Wong said it will take a decade to push for a referendum on whether Hong Kong should stay with China or split from it after 2047.
