CHINA-US: ECONOMIC/TECHNOLOGY TIES
The annual report of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS), which reviews foreign acquisitions for national security threats, noted that there had been rather a sharp uptick in Chinese deal-making activity in the US, and a shift of that interest towards technology. Among prominent examples it cited were: Tsinghua Unigroup which was only interested in buying a stake in Western Digital due to Western Digital's plan to acquire SanDisk; a Chinese consortium's US$ 2.8 billion bid for Philipps’ Lumileds unit; and a bid for Fairchild Semiconductors by a Chinese buyer. |
