CHINA-ECONOMY: WORKER UNREST

 In the wake of reports of lay-offs of coal miners, about 150 miners from the Anyuan Coal Mines of the Pingxiang Mining Group gathering at a crossroads and temporarily blocked traffic on February 29, 2016 to complain to the company. According to the Communist Party propaganda department of the Pingxiang Mining Group, nearly 1,000 workers from three mines marched through the streets on March 1, 2016, with banners reading “Workers want to survive, workers need to eat!”


(Comments: Incidentally, in 2002, a large statue of a young Mao Zedong was erected outside the Anyuan Coal Mine to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the five-day Great Strike of 1922 organised by Mao Zedong and others and which involved 10,000 miners and 4,000 to 5,000 railway workers.)
