CHINA-INTERNAL: WORKER UNREST

Over a thousand policemen broke up a workers strike on April 4, 2016, in Tuopai Township, Shehong County, Sichuan province. Many workers were injured and at least 100 arrested. The workers were demanding worker compensation and other benefits after the Tianying Group acquired  a 70% stake in the Tuopai Group LLC, which employs 7000 workers. Netizens posted a large quantity of video and photographs online depicting the violence of the police and SWAT teams. Women and senior citizens were among those shown being forcibly detained and dragged along the ground. The workers later that afternoon went to the township to demand the release of the prisoners, but were not successful. At the same time Tuopai Group threatened the workers, saying that if they didn't return to work on Tuesday April 5, 2016 they would be fired.
