CHINA-INTERNAL: CULTURAL REVOLUTION

Following an outcry against a concert staged by the Fifty-Six Flowers troupe and the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, which is directly under the Ministry of Culture, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on May 2, 2016, the performers are refusing to take responsibility for the event. The concert, which was attended by 6000 people and featured Cultural Revolution “red songs”, has confused critics about whether it signalled a political stance or intention in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of the revolution. The cultural authority for Beijing's Xicheng district, where the hall is located, said it approved the concert last month but the performers added a new organiser “in violation of regulations” and accused the performers of making up a propaganda agency.

The South China Morning Post quoted a source as saying that there were 300 performers in the 5-hour long show, but no high-profile officials attended except a few from the Chinese Communist Party Propaganda Department. Some observers said the concert was a continuation of the main themes that emerged out of the Spring Festival Gala organised by the state broadcaster. The performance on stage by 100 People’s Liberation Army honour guards, who took part in the September 3 military parade in Tiananmen Square, added to the controversy.

Hongkomg's well-informed newspaper 'Mingpao' reports that prominent « Red heirs » (princelings) have complained to the Chief of the CCP CC's General Office Li Zhanshu that this concert contradicts the spirit of the Party’s judgment on the Cultural Revolution.
