CHINA-INTERNAL: RELIGION-ISLAM

In the run-up to the G20 meeting in Hangzhou, Chinese public security authorities have stepped up surveillance on Muslim minorities and Muslims residing in China. According to reports, in the past month the PSB has for visited some Iranians residing for many years in Hangzhou on at least four occasions.  Separately, a Syrian who lives in Wenzhou has been ordered by the authorities not to visit Hangzhou until the G20 meeting is over in September and said that to ensure compliance they plan to visit him at his apartment every weekend.

During the Central Religious Affairs Work Conference held last month it was interesting that a large number of the comments by 'netizens' were directed against 'arabisation', muslims etc., even though the main target of the conference was not islam, but christianity.  Observers have noticed a more pronounced focus this year on the Hui and Gansu province and the Ningxia-Hui Autonomous Region in particular.
