CHINA-INTERNAL: SECURITY IN BEIJING FOR 19TH PARTY CONGRESS

A Tibetan traveling to Beijing this week was refused a room at a hotel after showing identification, and was taken by police to a special facility set up to accommodate Tibetans under supervision. He said “The police questioned me about my reasons for visiting Beijing and how long I was planning to stay. They said I would need to report to them again before leaving,” adding that “Earlier, I had heard that a Uyghur was harassed at the Beijing airport because he belonged to an ethnic minority group, and now I have experienced the same unfair treatment at the hands of the Chinese police.” The restrictions would be part of the security measures in Beijing preparatory to the 19th Party Congress scheduled to open on October 18 and the other major Party sessions to be held in the preceding weeks.
