CHINA-XI JINPING ADDRESSES FIRST INTERPOL MEETING IN CHINA

Addressing the first meeting of Interpol's General Assembly in Beijing on September 26, 2017, and flanked by China's top law enforcement leadership including Party security chief Meng Jianzhu and Minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun, Chinese President Xi Jinping said all nations have a right to be involved in regional and global security issues. Stating that “China is willing to work closely with other [Interpol] member states, international groups and institutions ... and actively participate in global security governance,” he announced that China would sponsor police training and tactical development under the Interpol umbrella by establishing a police academy to train 20,000 law enforcement personnel for developing countries. He said China would also sponsor the establishment of Interpol communication systems and criminal investigation labs in 100 developing nations.

(Comment: China has taken a major step towards enlarging its influence in law enforcement around the world and trying to seize leadership among developing nations in this area. Last year, Interpol elected Meng Hongwei, China's Vice Minister for Public Security, as head of the agency, the first Chinese national to hold the post.)
