CHINA-LEADERSHIP: XI JINPING ON MARXISM

Gu Liping, an editor in Xinhua, wrote in his despatch of September 30, that CCP CC General Secretary and Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed a group study session of the Politburo on September 29, when he called for "a profound understanding of Marxism and vigorous promotion of the sinicization of Marxism". He said that 'Marxism has shown great strength and vitality as a truth, and still serves an irreplaceable role in helping people understanding and transforming the world, as well as promoting social progress'. Xi Jinping stressed that 'though times are changing and society is developing, the basic tenets of Marxism remain true'. "If we deviate from or abandon Marxism, our Party would lose its soul and direction.On the fundamental issue of upholding the guiding role of Marxism, we must maintain unswerving resolve, never wavering at any time or under any circumstances." Saying that the 'Chinese people are more qualified and capable of revealing the historical experience and rules of development existent in the process, and making original contributions to the development of Marxism', Xi Jinping asked Party members to study contemporary capitalism, its essence and patterns. He said the CCP 'must continuously develop socialism with Chinese characteristics, continuously enhance China's comprehensive national strength and fully demonstrate the advantages of China's socialist system'. The use of scientific theories, he said, is of key importance to the Party's success.
