CHINA-TIBET: BORDER STABILITY AND GOVERNANCE CONFERENCE AND REFERENCE TO DOKLAM

On September 14-15, 2017, the China Borderland Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences held an academic seminar on "Border issues and Political Boundary stability of Tibet" in Beijing. It was attended by more than 30 experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China Reform and Opening Forum, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, China Tibetology Research Center, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Academy of Military Sciences and many other think tanks and scientific research units studying "Border issues and Governance edge stability." They had extensive in-depth discussions. Associate Professor Zheng Limei, Deputy Director of the Institute of Contemporary Tibet, and Yang Yabo, Associate Professor of the South Asia Research Institute, were invited to attend the seminar. 

During the seminar, Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Institute of Contemporary Tibet, Zheng Limei, made a speech on "Countermeasure suggestions on work adjustments with the neighboring countries in South Asia after Doklam incident". She said that the South Asia region should be the focus for China to carry out OBOR cooperation but that "it is also a hard nut to crack in the coming years for this cooperation". She suggested that China needs to clearly develop it's major working direction and objectives towards South Asian countries. Yang Yabo, Associate Professor of the South Asia Research Institute, spoke on "Competition for Aid among major powers in South Asia: Focusing on Nepal". He reviewed the course of giving assistance to Nepal by major super powers and also proposed "counter move measures" for giving further assistance to Nepal. Everyone unanimously agreed on strengthening the OBOR initiative, safeguarding the country's security and forcefully contributing to bringing the frontier regions under control.

The report of the Tibet Academy of Social Sciences noted that the presentations of both its researchers received a positive response and recognition from the experts and scholars present. It said experts and scholars of  the China Borderland Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences continued discussions after the seminar on topics of mutual concern and for a wide range of in-depth exchanges at seminars.
