CHINA-19TH PARTY CONGRESS: AUSTERITY CAMPAIGN

The official news agency Xinhua and the official Party mouthpiece People's Daily on October 18, 2017 -- the opening day of the 19th Party Congress in Beijing -- publicised that the austerity campaign initiated by Xi Jinping had resulted in 140 central and state organisations disposing off 3868 official vehicles and that in 2016 expenditure on official entertainment had dropped by 61.8%. It said expenditure on official entertainment had dropped by 72.03% since 2012 or a decrease by 1.079 billion yuan. They said 29 provinces and autonomous regions across China had basically completed these reforms and that sound systems had been established across China to restrict purchase and hiring of accommodation, meals, cars and other services. In Tianjin, Liaoning and Fujian, expenditure on official receptions fell more than 70% and in 2016, expenditure by the centre fell more than 41.08%.
