CHINA-ZIMBABWE: A ROLE IN THE COUP?

Zimbabwe Army Chief, General Constantine Chiwenga's visit to Beijing just days before the military coup on November 15, 2017, that overthrew 93-year old Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has sparked speculation that Beijing either had advance warning of the coup or had a hand in it. There is also speculation whether Mugabe might finally be given asylum in China.

(Comment: China’s relationship with Zimbabwe as well as with Mugabe personally can be traced back to the 1970s when, seeking Zimbabwe’s independence, Mugabe started to embrace Marxism. Meanwhile, China also actively supported Mugabe both with money and arms. Mugabe's wife, Grace, also received her BA in Chinese language from Renmin University in 2011.)
