On November 28, 2017, the Yueyang Intermediate People's Court of Hunan Province sentenced Li Mingzhe, a citizen of Taiwan, and Peng Yuhua, a Chinese citizen, to "Subversion of State Power". Peng Yuhua was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and Li Mingzhe to imprisonment for five years. The Yueyang court alleged in September that Mr. Lee and his co-defendant, Peng Yuhua, a Chinese citizen, had used the social networking site to plan protests in China.
Li Mingzhe, wife Li Jingyu, arrived in Yueyang on the day before to attend the verdict. Li Jingyu said in a statement after the verdict: "The pursuit of ideals must pay the price." The struggle for human rights for the underprivileged is a necessary dedication to promoting the advancement of human civilization. Li Mingzhe knows that mountains and tigers have long been awakened to have to accept being 'condemned' We are not confined to the fantasy, and now we are calmly confronted, and we have no right to complain. As the wife of Li Mingzhe, I once again express my pride in honor of Lee". The Presidential Palace in Taiwan issued a statement saying: "Li Mingzhe was not able to accept the conviction of the Chinese mainland court that he was convicted of "subverting the state" because of his interest in civil society and democratic development in mainland China and the concept of democratic freedom. It also called for the Beijing authorities to release people as soon as possible so that Li Mingzhe will return to Taiwan as soon as possible". The statement states that the Li Ming-che case seriously harmed cross-Strait relations. The DPP also said in a statement that it strongly displeased and regretted that the verdict was totally unacceptable.
