CHINA-PLA: SOUTH CHINA SEA

An official document jointly issued on December 12, 2017, by China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and State Oceanic Administration said China will advance construction of seawater desalination projects on about 100 islands in coastal provinces including Liaoning, Shandong, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Hainan in the next 3 to 5 years. It said the projects, which are designed to help desalinate some 600,000 tons of seawater a day, are expected to effectively solve the water problem of residents.Seawater desalination, it said, will be one of the main ways to supply water by 2020 and it desalination equipment will be supported by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
