CHINA-ECONOMY: POVERTY ALLEVIATION FOR RETURNING OVERSEAS CHINESE

China News Agency on January 26, 2018 reported that since 2016, in accordance with the overall plan of the Central Government's precise poverty alleviation strategy, the Office of the Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council has taken advantage of its resources and solidly promoted poverty alleviation work for overseas Chinese. It said expenditure on the poor returning overseas Chinese and relatives had dropped from 1.17 million Yuan in 2015 to 99,000 Yuan by the end of 2017, with the incidence of poverty dropping from 3.27% to 0.28%, a decrease of nearly 92%.  It publicised the visit of  Qiu YuanpingDirector of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, to Guiqiao in Gansu Province and projects taken up in different provinces.  It said more than 30,000 portable solar satellite TV sets were donated by overseas compatriots to Tibetan farmers and herdsmen alike, and the local people affectionately called it "horseback television."
