CHINA-SOFT POWER: CONFUCIUS INSTITUTES

According to an official Chinese government website, since the Chinese government’s Ministry of Education -- the Office of Chinese Languages Council International, better known as the Hanban -- began establishing Confucious Institutes in 2004, there are now 500 "Confucius Institutes" around the world and the aim is to have 1,000 by 2020. The Hanban also operates Confucius Classrooms (CCs) at 501 primary and secondary schools in the United States and more elsewhere. These 604 educational outposts comprise a plurality of China’s 1,579 Confucius Institutes and Classrooms worldwide. In 2015, their budget was $310 million, and from 2006-2015 China spent $1.85 billion on Confucius Institutes.
