CHINA-INTERNAL: CAMPAIGN AGAINST CORRUPTION

The Central Discipline Inspection Commission (CDIC) has launched an operation called “Fox Hunt 2014”, to investigate allegedly corrupt officials who have absconded or sent relatives and assets abroad. Beijing-based British, US, Canadian and Australian diplomats say they are under increasing pressure to assist with "Fox Hunt 2014". The US-based non-profit group Global Financial Integrity estimates illegal flows out of China amounted to $2.83 tn between 2005 and 2011.

The Financial Times separately learnt that Cao Jianliao,  former Vice Mayor of Guangzhou who was detained last year along with his wife, mistress and at least one associate, are subjects of a CCDI investigation. Interestingly, all of them, including Cao Jianliao’s child, are based in New Zealand and at least one of them is a New Zealand citizen.
