CHINA: COVERAGE OF INDIAN PRIME MINISTER MODI'S VISIT TO USA

In a despatch on September 30, 2014, captioned 'Indian Prime Minister Modi's visit to US is to seek investment and cooperation in security strategy', the China International Broadcasting Network (CIBN) news agency said Indian Prime Minister Modi on September 29  begins a two day official state visit to the U.S. and will also visit White House. The United States said the two leaders will carry out discussions and consultations on a series of issues of mutual concern  to extend and deepen the US-India strategic partnership. But some analysts have pointed out that while the US sees that this visit can make a major breakthrough in relations between the two countries but still there is not much hope.

On   26th Sept. Modi  arrived in New York to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, and this was his first visit to the United States as Prime Minister of India, and he received a  warm welcome by the American as well as Indian people in the United States. On the 28th night, nearly two million American Indians gathered in New York's Madison Square Garden to welcome Modi's visit. Modi in his speech mentioned that,  previously, the World recognised Indian peoples as snake charmers, and now the young Indians are playing with the mouse, and his  remarks were welcomed like that of a rock star.

Modi's state visit to the United States was on  the 29th and the 30th Sept.  and  on the 29th  morning  his event venue was in New York. He had breakfast with 11 CEO from among the World's 500 most powerful CEOs as listed by Fortune Magazine, and exchanged views with the financial leaders of New York. In addition, he will meet former President Bill Clinton and former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In Washington DC, Barack Obama invited him for a private dinner in his honor at the White House. On 30th Sept. Modi will hold talks with Obama.

Since the announcement of Modi's visit, Media and think tank comments summed up Modi's visit on two key issues: The economic and strategic.  The  inauguration of Modi government is still less than six months. India's top priority is to solve the problem of economic development and employment , therefore, as Modi has said economy will be the driving force of Indian diplomacy. Just recently, President Xi Jinping during his visit to India announced that it would invest $ 20 billion in India. However, the U.S. government apparently unable to promise as much  investment to Prime Minister Modi. Therefore, his main aim in the US is to persuade US enterprises to invest in India and that also includes  the 3.2 million Indians in the United States. On the 28th evening there was a big gathering in New York where he announced that all Indians will get a lifetime visa.

While talks with Obama and other American politicians in Washington may be more focused on bilateral cooperation and security strategies, the situation in Afghanistan, current situations of Syria and Iraq  where there is the scope of the war on terror and so on, of course, the United States also hopes to discuss bilateral cooperation, global response to climate change and so on.

On the 29th Sept. in a regular press conference of White House, a reporter asked whether the  US-India summit meeting will announce any agreement or  whether this is just a meeting for mutual understanding.  The White House spokesperson broadly stressed that both sides will discuss a very wide range of issues but avoided giving any details. Ernie Els, a senior fellow of the American Council on Foreign Relations think tank, wrote that any outcome of Modi's visit will be reflected in the Wall Street rather than in the White  House. He also pointed out that India is accelerating its  economic development, will play a greater role in international and regional affairs, and that especially the United States to implement its Asia-Pacific strategy and the war on terror needs India. While India will develop its relations with the United States in order to  deal with other countries and to get a greater weight in the region, India also needs the United States. Therefore Modi's visit will promote the development of bilateral relations. This is exactly what will be the outcome of  Prime Minister Modi's meeting with President Obama.
