CHINA-HONGKONG PROTESTS

A Commentary in the Party's official mouthpiece 'People's Daily', which was reproduced by the Xinhua news agency on October 14, 2014, asserted that democracy must be based on the rule of law and it should never be hijacked as an excuse for "unchecked behavior." Accusing protesters of attacking the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and attempting to force the HKSAR Chief Executive to resign, it said "they are doomed to fail." The commentary added "Facts and history tell us that radical and illegal acts that got their way only result in more severe illegal activities, exacerbating disorder and turmoil," and different opinions for Hong Kong's democratic development should be expressed "via various legal channels." The commentary declared, in conclusion, "Stability is bliss, and turmoil brings havoc."
