CHINA-PLA NAVY: SUBMARINE IN INDIAN OCEAN

In the weekly press briefing of China's Ministry of National Defence on September 30, 2014, PLA spokesman Colonel Geng Yansheng confirmed that a PLA Navy (PLAN) submarine was headed off the coast of Somalia to join anti-piracy operations.

(Comment: This will be the first time that a PLAN submarine will participate in anti-piracy operations. Earlier, a PLAN 2,200-ton Song Class diesel attack submarine (SSK) was in Colombo from September 7-14, 2014 coinciding with Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the Maldives, Sri Lanka and India. That was the first time ever that a PLAN submarine was spotted so far out and in the Indian Ocean. India needs to seriously view the development especially as it enhances the type of operations that PLAN could take in waters close to India.)
