In a recently released book entitled 'The Theory of Island Warfare', retired General Zhu Wenquan, former Commander of the People's Liberation Army's Nanjing Military Region, discussed the scenario of a Chinese takeover of disputed islands in the East and South China seas. He said that China, faced with rising tensions with Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines, needs to establish new strategies to successfully pull off a takeover and  must know its enemy well before the outbreak of conflict.

Zhu Wenquan said China must establish an advanced information integration platform and improve coordination between the PLA Air Force and PLA Navy in battle. He added that it is important for PLA soldiers to be familiar with international laws and war conventions to enable them to win hearts and minds as well as battles.
