CHINA-VATICAN: DALAI LAMA

The Pope has declined to meet the Dalai Lama while the latter visits (December 11-14, 2014) Rome for a meeting of Nobel Prize winners. Vatican officials frankly explained that they denied the Dalai Lama’s request for a papal audience “for obvious reasons concerning the delicate situation” with China. An anonymous Vatican official said the decision was “not taken out of fear but to avoid any suffering by those who have already suffered.”
(Comments:The meeting of Nobel laureattes was shifted from South Africa to Rome as China had successfully persuaded South Africa to deny a visa to the Dalai Lama.)
