CHINA-INTERNAL: LEADERSHIP

Sun Chunlan, Politburo Member and Tianjin Party Chief will take over as head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s United Front Work Department, apparently replacing disgraced Ling Jihua. After a brief mention of this appointment, China's official media later retrieved the news. (Comment: Sun Chunlan was born in 1950 and joined the CCP in 1973. She spent most of her career time in Liaoning Province, where she held leading positions in the Provincial Women's Federation, Provincial and National Trade Union. Sun has served as Fujian party secretarysince 2009 and Fujian Provincial People’s Congress chairwoman since 2010. Sun Chunlan is widely considered a protégé of Hu Jintao, and it is possible she established her relationship with Hu Jintao during her study at the Central Party School in the early 1990s, when Hu Jintao was its President. Sun Chunlan is reported to have been a long-time foe of Bo Xilai, the disgraced former Chongqing party boss. After taking over from Bo Xilai as Party Chief of Dalian in 2001, when Bo Xilai was appointed governor of Liaoning, she removed nearly all Bo's trusted subordinates in Dalian. Sun Chunlan is reputed to be low-profile, tough and politically skillful.)
