CHINA-INTERNAL: LEADERSHIP/BO XILAI

According to Foreign Policy, ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai's estranged son, 37-year old Li Wangzhi in a post on Weibo on January 1, 2015, said that he had his first meeting with Bo Xilai in seven years in early 2014. Bo Xilai’s son through his previous marriage to Li Danyu, he had been estranged from his father since 2007. Educated in Columbia University, New York, Li Wangzhi now lives in Beijing. According to Li Wangzhi’s post, 2014 was “the year where I recall seeing more of my father than any time in the past 30 years.” He added that he was hopeful that he could have “as many more opportunities to see [Bo]” as the “law allows.” Li Wangzhi concluded by writing that he had received “numerous” private messages inquiring about Bo Xilai and that he was “physically doing okay; although [living] conditions are limited, he can receive treatment when he is sick.” By January 3, 2015, Li Wangzhi’s message would not load on his Weibo account and some people complained about the message having been deleted by censors. However, on Free Weibo, a mirror site, there is considerable online support for Bo Xilai, who continues to enjoy significant grassroots support in Chongqing. Many posts wished “the Secretary,” i.e. Bo Xilai well.
