CHINA-INTERNAL: HONGKONG

As warned at the time by China's official media that the 'Occupy Central' protesters will pay the price, the Hongkong Standard reported that Hongkong authorities have commenced arresting at least 50 protest leaders including professors, legislators, and students. Among those targeted are leaders of the Federation of Students including secretary general Alex Chow, Eason Chung and Lester Shum; Joshua Wong of the group Scholarism; and Benny Tai, Chan Kin-man and Reverend Chu Yiu-ming, leaders of the Occupy Central With Love and Peace movement. Pro-democracy lawmakers including the Civic Party’s Alan Leong, Labour Party's Lee Cheuk-yan and League of Social Democrats’ Leung Kwok-hung could also face arrest. They were contacted by the Organized Crime Division of Hongkong Police which asked them to report to the police at a definite time to get arrested to save the police a trip to their home. (Comment: Pro-democracy demonstrators occupied key parts of the city for 79 days to protest China’s decision to vet candidates for the city’s first election of its chief executive in 2017. The Chinese and Hong Kong governments refused to make any concessions)
