A report in Beijing News on January 7, 2015, disclosed that senior government officials have been told to stay away from standing in election for memberships of the country's two leading academies, namely, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Both had announced their new election rules in December, which disqualify officials above division level from the biennial recruitment, which started on January 1, 2015.
(Comment: Becoming a CAS or CAE academician, or yuanshi, is considered one of the highest honors for a scientist in China.)
