CHINA-NPC: TIBET

Zhu Weiqun, head of the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and former Executive Vice Minister of the CCP CC's United Front Work Department (UFWD), on March 11, 2015, urged the Dalai Lama to "forsake his evil ways and return to the good." Stressing that Tibet will not descend into chaos, he said "We hope the Dalai Lama can abandon his separatist stance and his deceptive 'middle way' approach," he also called on the Dalai Lama and his followers to stop inciting self-immolation among the Tibetan people and sincerely discuss with the central government about his own future.Reiterating that 'the door for dialogue with the Dalai Lama is always open but when the dialogue will be held depends on the attitude of the Dalai Lama', he added the central government will not talk about Tibet's "high-level autonomy" or the "Greater Tibet". Commenting on the Dalai Lama's visits abroad, he said "We hope that the Daila Lama's visits will not affect the development of the good relationship between China and relevant countries." Earlier the previous day (March 10), the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Regional People's Congress, Padma Choling described to the media, during a panel discussion with other Deputies in the delegation from TAR to the NPC, that the Dalai Lama's recent remarks, that the Tibetan Buddhism tradition of reincarnation should cease with his death, was blasphemy to Tibetan Buddhism. Asserting that "It's not up to the Dalai Lama", he said that "he himself followed strict religious rituals and historic conventions and was approved by the then Kuomintang central government before he could enter Tibet from Qinghai Province to be enthroned in Lhasa. It was impossible for him to become the 14th Dalai Lama without the endorsement of the central government." The Global Times on March 10, 2015, commented that the "Dalai Lama, 80, who has reportedly been struggling with illnesses in recent years, said in December that his traditional religious role should cease with his death". Wu Yingjie, Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of China Tibet Commission, warned on Monday at the panel discussion of the Tibet delegation of officials whose belief is not firm enough in the battle against separatism. Gyaincain Norbu, the 11th Panchen Lama and member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended the plenary session of the CPPCC at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on March 9, 2015.
