CHINA-INTERNAL: WOMEN'S RIGHTS

On March 6 and 7, 2015, public security officials in various cities across China apprehended at least 10 women who sought to mark International Women’s Day with a nation-wide campaign highlighting the increase in sexual harassment on public transportation. They had planned to distribute leaflets and stickers calling for the end of such sexual harassment and for the police to take some action against sexual harassment on public transportation. 5 of these 10 women have been released and 5 were officially detained allegedly under Article 293(4) of the Chinese government’s criminal law: “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, tweeted her disapproval with the Chinese government’s detention of Wu Rongrong, Zheng Churan, Wei Tingting, Wang Man and Li Tingting on March 13, 2015.
