CHINA-JAPAN: SENIOR-LEVEL CONTACTS

Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun reported on April 4, 2015, that the Vice Chairman of China’s Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Ji Bingxuan, will lead a group of parliamentarians to Japan. The delegation will be in Japan from April 8-11, 2015. This is the first time a Chinese deputy premier-level official will visit Japan since high-level political exchanges between the two countries ceased after China’s reaction to the Japanese government’s nationalization of some of the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture in September 2012.

Ji Bingxuan is scheduled to attend a Japan-China assembly exchange committee that will be held for the first time in about three years. He is also likely to meet the Speaker of Japan's lower house, Nobutaka Machimura.

China’s National Tourism Administration Chairman Li Jinzao is also scheduled to visit Japan for a meeting between tourism ministers of Japan, China and South Korea, which will be held on April 11 and 12, and plans to meet with Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Minister Akihiro Ota.

In March this year, Li Liguo, civil affairs minister in charge of disaster management, visited Japan, the first time in about three years a Chinese cabinet member has done so.
