CHINA-INTERNAL: PLA NAVY

Vasily Kashin, a Russian military expert was cited by the Moscow-based Sputnik News on April 12, 2015 as saying that China is likely to re-design its second fifth-generation stealth fighter, the J-31, with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. China is constructing its first amphibious assault ship to prepare the People's Liberation Army Navy for possible conflict in the disputed regions of the South China Sea. Once construction of the vessel is completed, only fighters with vertical takeoff and landing gear will be able to deploy aboard the amphibious assault ship's flight deck. The J-31 shares a similar fuselage to the F-35 fighter designed by Lockheed Martin, according to the report. Since the United States has developed a F-35B fighter with vertical takeoff and landing gear, China will apply the same strategy to the J-31.
