CHINA-INTERNAL: EX-PLA OFFICER SPEAKS OUT AGAINST TIANANMEN EVENT

The New York Times reported (May 28) that on the eve of the anniversary of the "Tiananmen incident" on June 3-4, 1998, 66-year old former PLA Lieutenant Ms. Jiang Lin called for a public reckoning because generations of Chinese Communist Party leaders, including President Xi Jinping, have expressed no remorse for the violence. She said General Xu Qinxian, the leader of the PLA's  38th Group Army, refused to lead his troops into Beijing without clear written orders, and checked himself into a hospital. Seven commanders signed a letter opposing martial law that they submitted to the Central Military Commission that oversaw the military. She said “It was a very simple message. The People’s Liberation Army is the people’s military and it should not enter the city or fire on civilians.” Ms. Jiang Lin left China this week.
