CHINA-US: US SECRETARY OF STATE ANNOUNCES PROPOSAL TO IMPOSE VISA RESTRICTIONS ON HUAWEI EMPLOYEES AND PUTS TECH COMPANIES ON NOTICE

The U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said (July 15) in a press briefing that the US will impose visa restrictions on certain employees of Chinese technology companies, including Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. Pompeo said, “Huawei [is] an arm of the CCP’s surveillance state that censors political dissidents and enables mass internment camps in Xinjiang.” “Telecommunications companies around the world should consider themselves on notice: If they are doing business with Huawei, they are doing business with human rights abusers.” He also hinted that employees of other Chinese tech companies could be on the chopping block, pending further review. China's Global Times promptly reacted to Pompeo's remarks stating: “The move…demonstrates how the US is politicizing business issues on fabricated reasoning in an aim to contain the rise of Chinese tech firms like Huawei.” Caixin (July 17) said  Pompeo’s announcement followed the British government’s decision to stop using Huawei gear in the country’s 5G network and observed that the announcement is the latest move by the U.S. to contain the Chinese telecom equipment giant, which is at the centre of the power clash between the world’s two largest economies.  It said the Trump administration stepped up efforts to bar Huawei, citing the company as a threat to national security. Huawei has repeatedly denied the allegations. Caixin added that the UK government said (July 13) that Britain will completely eliminate all existing Huawei gear by the end of 2027.
