CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINESE PREMIER LI KEQIANG PRESIDES OVER STATE COUNCIL EXECUTIVE WEEKLY MEETING TO DISCUSS ADVANCING MEDICAL EDUCATION

Presiding over the State Council meeting on September 9, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang described the shortage of qualified medical personnel as a big problem. He said “The total amount and structure of medical personnel in China are not suitable for the construction of a healthy China” and that the COVID-19 epidemic had shown that "there are insufficient talents in public health, critical care and nursing.” Li Keqiang proposed more efforts in: strengthening the reform and innovation of medical education; improving the quality of medical training and medical talent; and improving the career prospects of qualified clinically-trained physicians. Accordingly it was approved that the Ministry of Finance will  give more fiscal support to the central and western regions to train more university medical majors; the training of nursing personnel will be elevated to the same level as that of medical staff; centers for disease control will have to enhance cooperative training with medical schools.; Traditional Chinese medicine classes should be taught more at medical schools.; and clinical experience will carry more weight in the professional appraisal of doctors.
