CHINA-PLA: CHINESE ANALYSTS CALL FOR MORE TYPE-15 TANKS IN PLA WESTERN THEATRE COMMAND

Following the release recently by 'Yangguang Military' of photographs of comprehensive exercises in the PLA Western Theater, Chinese military analysts on September 17 complained there were too few Type-15 tanks in the PLA Western Theatre Command in contrast to the large reserves of Type-59 tanks. They said the Type-59 tanks are too heavy for deployment in the mountain environment. Stating that it is necessary to maintain an armoured force composed of medium tanks, it was said that while the initial production was low, depending on how the Type-15 tanks perform and after incorporating the required modifications their production would be increased. It was concluded that this was a "wise" approach.
