CHINA-INDIA: CHINA'S OVERSEAS MEDIA COMMENT ON COMPOSITION OF INDIAN DELEGATION FOR BORDER TALKS

The overseas Chinese news outlet on September 21 commented on the altered composition of the Indian team to the border talks on September 21. Noting the presence of two Lt. Generals and addition of a Major General and Joint Secretary from the MEA for the first time, it claimed that sources had said that the new additions from New Delhi are significant and by adding representatives from New Delhi India hopes to strengthen its bargaining power. The report emphasised that the inclusion of the diplomat who participates in meetings of the India-China border affairs consultation and coordination mechanism is important. The report said a marathon meeting is expected and India will insist that the People's Liberation Army withdraw from all friction points within a certain period of time. The purpose of China's visit is to ask India to retreat from all the strategic heights it occupies in Chushul. It said no breakthrough is expected in the talks.
