CHINA-US: US STATE DEPARTMENT ISSUES RULES THAT ANYONE BELONGING OR AFFILIATED TO A COMMUNIST PARTY OR OTHER TOTALITARIAN PARTY IS INADMISSABLE TO THE U.S.

The US State Department issued a notice on October 2, 2020, which states that "The inadmissibility ground for membership in or affiliation with the Communist or any other totalitarian party1 is part of a broader set of laws passed by Congress to address threats to the safety and security of the United States. In general, unless otherwise exempt, any immigrant who is or has been a member of or affiliated with the Communist or any other totalitarian party (or subdivision or affiliate), domestic or foreign, is inadmissible to the United States". Hu Xijin, Editor-in-Chief of the CCP-owned Global Times, sought to put a positive spin on the rule change, saying on Twitter that the immigration restriction would help “keep more talents in China. Many outstanding talents in China are Communist Party members.”

(Comment: This ruling will provoke widespread concern in China. If the provisions are widened to include visitors or student visas, almost 300-400 million persons directly related to CCP members could be affected.)
