Foreign Policy Magazine's China Brief (December 2) reported that Hu Xijin, Editor-in-Chief of the CCP-owned Global Times faces potential political trouble after an accusation by his Deputy Editor-in-Chief Duan Jingtao, that he has fathered two children with employees. Hu Xijin has called the accusations concocted — an alleged plot by his deputy to try to create a disciplinary case against him within the Chinese Communist Party. Reports say that Hu Xijin is unpopular within the People’s Daily, which owns the Global Times, but his business success and political intelligence have so far protected him. Hu Xijin refuted the allegation in November, where he claimed that Duan Jingtao had come to his office on October 27 and asked him to step down as she would then take over. She had said that she was not threatening him but telling him that she wanted his job. He disclosed that he had reported Duan Jingtao's behaviour to the Global Times Social Affairs Committee and Head of the People's Daily. He also said that following "a small video conference with some colleagues in charge of the Global Times at Guangzhou Airport" it was decided that "We will ask People's Daily to make a formal conclusion. But that requires a process". He said, "when the newspaper has a conclusion, I will further inform you".
