CHINA-LEADERSHIP: NPC STANDING COMMITTEE HOLDS 24TH PLENARY MEETING

The 24th meeting of the 13th National People's Congress Standing Committee held its second plenary meeting in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the morning of December 23. NPC Chairman Li Zhanshu attended and Vice Chairman Wang Chen presided over the meeting. The State Council Information Office (SCIO) disclosed that the 24th Standing Committee meeting was deliberating a 32-article draft law on preventing food waste to ensure food security. It described the law 'as of great significance to promoting a healthy, rational, and green lifestyle and better consumption behaviour' and 'essential to accelerating the construction of a resource-conserving and environmentally-friendly society'. The SCIO statement also said "the issue of food waste has been of widespread concern in the country in recent years" and since the 18th Party Congress the government has been paying more attention to the issue, with policies issued and campaigns launched to curb food waste. It said a nationwide "Clear Your Plate" campaign is gaining steam across the country, both online and offline.
