CHINA-LEADERSHIP: HAN CADRE APPOINTED HEAD OF NATIONAL ETHNIC AFFAIRS COMMISSION
66-year-old Chen Xiaojiang, a Han majority cadre, was appointed head of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, the body responsible for ethnic minority affairs on December 14, breaking a tradition followed since 1954 of having a member of the minority groups heading the body. Chen Xiaojiang replaces Bagatur, a Mongol cadre. Chen Xiaojiang was previously in the CDIC.
(Comment: The National Ethnic Affairs Commission, which was under the PRC State Council, was brought under the CCP CC United Front Work Department in 2018.)
