CHINA-DISSIDENTS: PENALTY FOR XU ZHIYONG RAISED BY AUTHORITIES

Chinese authorities have reportedly upgraded the charges against detained Chinese writer and human rights lawyer Xu Zhiyong to “subversion of state power,” a more serious charge than the previous charge of “inciting subversion.” Xu Zhiyong, who wrote an essay defying the state’s official narrative on its handling of COVID-19 and called on Xi Jinping to resign, has been held in incommunicado detention since February 15, 2020. The Chinese authorities are learnt to have also reportedly elevated charges against activist Ding Jiaxi. Both men have been held in the same detention center in Shandong province.
