CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING CHAIRS POLITBURO MEETING ON JANUARY 28

Xinhua reported (January 28) that Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CCP Central Committee chaired a meeting of the Politburo on January 28 to review multiple reports. It said among the reports, are those related to the work of the leading Party members groups of the top legislature, central government, top political advisory body, top court, top procuratorate, as well as the CCP CC Secretariat. The others concern primary-level governance and Party inspection.

In its report on the Politburo meeting of January 28, the state-owned CCTV (January 30) said it had discussed the key tasks of making a good start and getting started in China's development during the 14th Five-Year Plan. It said CCP CC General Secretary Xi Jinping had exhorted "Leading cadres at all levels, especially senior cadres, should continuously improve their political judgment, political understanding, and political execution, and be aware of the 'bigger one of the country'." It noted that within the month of January alone, Xi Jinping has mentioned the phrase the 'bigger one of the country' at each of the four meetings of the Politburo Standing Committee, meetings of the Politburo, and seminars for major provincial and ministerial leaders to study and implement the spirit of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee. It added that China is presently "in the historical confluence of the "two centenary" goals, and the world is undergoing major changes unseen in a century". The reference to the 'bigger one of the country', it clarified was to the issue of the environment.
