CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING VISITS GUIZHOU PROVINCE

Xi Jinping travelled to Guizhou province on February 3-4, 2021, at the beginning of the annual Chinese New Year. In Guizhou, Xi Jinping visited Qianxi County, Bijie City, to observe the ecological environment of the Liuchong section of Wujiang River, visited a minority villager's family’s home in Xinren Miao Village, and at the Village Cultural Square, had a cordial exchange with people participating in ethnic minority Spring Festival folk activities, and extended New Year blessings to people of all ethnic groups across the country. Guizhou was, incidentally, the last province to end "extreme poverty". Poverty alleviation has been a central theme of his trip. A detailed CCTV report (February 6) on the visit highlighted the progress in Guizhou and Xinren Miao Township and in the clean-up of the 1044-kilometre Wujiang River.

(Comment: For the past eight years since he came to power, Xi Jinping has each year travelled to poor provinces around the Chinese New Year. His visits have included provinces like Gansu, Shaanxi and Yunan. The Chinese government is now shifting resources to the rural revitalization strategy – hoping to make the gains of poverty alleviation sustainable.
